SATELLITE BASED IMAGERY: Water Pollution Detection with Satellite Radar

Storm water runoff from coastal metropolitan areas is being increasingly recognized as one of the greatest sources of marine pollution. Coastal sewage treatment facilities that discharge their treated effluent offshore are also monitored for pollution effects. Ocean Imaging has worked with several sanitation districts, the EPA and NASA to test the utility of remote sensing in enhancing the existing monitoring programs. In some cases, as shown here, the results are dramatic. Data from satellite Synthetic Aperture Radars revealed a source of practically untreated sewage being dumped directly into the surf zone through a creek bed at a rate of 25-35 million gallons per day! Starting in 2002, Ocean Imaging began regular remote sensing-based monitoring as part of State-mandated monitoring programs for outfalls in the San Diego/Tijuana, Mexico region.
