SATELLITE BASED IMAGERY: Search and Rescue Support

Ocean Imaging utilizes real-time satellite and aerial data in support of "SAR" operations on land and sea. This example shows an analysis produced as part of work done for the California Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response. Periodic beachings of dead and oil-soiled birds north and south of San Francisco led to a search for the source of the spilled oil. Thousands of birds died over several months. The first task was to narrow down the possible location of the recurring spills. We used our AVHRR and MODIS-based current tracking techniques to explain how birds from the south of Pt. Rayes could have washed-up on beaches north of the Point. This and other analyses helped eliminate possible sources to the north and narrowed the search to an area near the San Francisco Bay mouth. The oil source eventually proved to be the wreck of the M/V Luckenbach located approximately 30km southwest of San Francisco Bay. About 83,000 gallons of bunker oil were subsequently salvaged from the leaking wreck in 2002, ending the mysterious spillages.
